Besiktas vs Fatih Karagumruk: Peview, team news & prediction as Ndidi makes Super Lig comeback

Sunday’s Trendyol Super Lig fixture at Tupras Stadium pits a side still fighting for European football Besiktas, against one desperately clawing for survival Fatih Kargumruk, and the contrast could hardly be starker heading into Gameweek 31.

Besiktas come into this one sitting fourth in the table, knowing that a run of wins between now and the season’s close on 17 May could cement their place in the UEFA Conference League qualifying spots, or even push them higher.

Fatih Karagumruk, meanwhile, prop up the entire division in 18th place, returning to top-flight football this season after a year’s absence and, on current evidence, heading straight back to the TFF First League. Three points for Sergen Yalcin’s side would be enormous; three points for the visitors would amount to one of the results of the season.

The news that Wilfred Ndidi is back available could hardly be better timed for Sergen Yalcin.

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full”><img decoding=”async” width=”5530″ height=”3687″ src=”https://www.afrik-foot.com/en-ng/thumbor/0VLlgyd81Q8rl2KzV-dyOZFPn6A=/5530×3687/smart/filters:format(webp)/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-ng%2F2026%2F03%2Fimago1073048723-1.jpg” alt=”Nigeria and Besiktas star Wilfred Ndidi” class=”wp-image-907959″/>
Nigeria and Besiktas star Wilfred Ndidi.
The Nigeria captain picked up a Grade 2 partial hamstring tear in the 85th minute of Besiktas’s 1-0 Istanbul derby defeat to Fenerbahce on April 5, a match that was already painful enough given the controversy surrounding the late penalty that decided it.

He missed both league games that followed, the Antalyaspor fixture and the loss at Samsunspor, and the evidence of those two results made it clear just how much Besiktas rely on him.

Without Ndidi’s defensive shield at the base of midfield, the Black Eagles looked exposed, lacked their usual structural discipline, and surrendered ground to teams around them in the table at the worst possible moment of the season.

The good news is that his rehabilitation went better than the initial prognosis suggested, and on Thursday night he returned to competitive action, completing the full 90 minutes as Besiktas beat Alanyaspor 3-0 in the Turkish Cup quarter-final.

That he went straight back into the starting eleven and lasted the game without any setback is a significant green light ahead of Sunday.

Ndidi has made 26 appearances for Besiktas across all competitions since joining on a permanent three-year deal from Leicester City last summer, scoring twice in the league, and his importance to how Yalcin’s side functions cannot be overstated.

He is the platform on which everything else is built: his ball-winning, his positional discipline and his ability to shield the back four are what allow Orkun Kokcu to play with the creative freedom that has made the Turkey international the standout player in this Besiktas team.

Now vice-captain at club level and captain of Nigeria, the 29-year-old Lagos-born midfielder has also attracted reported interest from Manchester United in recent weeks, which is a measure of the reputation he has rebuilt after eight years at Leicester City.

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full”><img decoding=”async” width=”850″ height=”567″ src=”https://www.afrik-foot.com/en-ng/thumbor/FbCPlWfIg5A1cLY2ui5QsuWm-JA=/850×567/smart/filters:format(webp)/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-ng%2F2026%2F01%2FICONSPORT_281415_0135.jpg” alt=”Ndidi: Details of AFCON-ending injury revealed amid transfer interest” class=”wp-image-901228″/>

Match Preview: The Bigger Picture

This season has been one of genuine rebuild for Besiktas, shaped almost entirely by a single dramatic moment in late August 2025 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was dismissed after a poor start that left the club eighth.

Sergen Yalcin, the legendary former player who had already guided the club to a domestic double in 2020-21, returned for a second stint and immediately made his presence felt, winning his opening match 4-0 against Kayserispor.

Since then the Eagles have been transformed, and across all competitions they have posted a record of 23 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats, scoring 82 goals in 45 matches, which represents a significant return by any measure.

Their league form over the past six fixtures reads L-W-W-L-W-L, and while they beat Antalyaspor 4-2 at home in their penultimate outing, the most recent loss, a 2-1 defeat at Samsunspor on April 19, was a reminder that nothing is wrapped up yet.

They arrive here fourth in the Super Lig table, and with European qualification the prize on offer, they cannot afford another slip, particularly at home where they have been noticeably stronger throughout the campaign.

Fatih Karagumruk’s story this season has been one of almost unrelenting disappointment.

Promoted back to the Super Lig after just one season away, they have won only five of their 30 league games, drawing five more and losing a staggering 20, which leaves them bottom of the table with a record of 5-5-20.

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full”><img decoding=”async” width=”3432″ height=”2288″ src=”https://www.afrik-foot.com/en-ng/thumbor/KL5agoEMdrYeZMuLQDDg0KAJVac=/3432×2288/smart/filters:format(webp)/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-ng%2F2026%2F04%2Fimago1074198456.jpg” alt=”Bartug Elmaz of Fatih Karagumruk celebrates after scoring the first goal of his team with teammates during the Trendyol Turkish Süper League match between Fatih Karagumruk SK and Fenerbahce SK at Ataturk Olympic Stadium on March 13, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey.” class=”wp-image-913160″/>
Bartug Elmaz of Fatih Karagumruk.
A five-match losing run at one point this term is tied for the worst in the division, and it tells you all you need to know about their inability to string results together.

Their last six competitive results read L-L-W-L-W-D, and even the wins have come against sides close to them in the table.

The 2-0 win over Fenerbahce that Karagumruk pulled off in their own stadium was a rare bright spot, but it feels a long time ago now.

With just four matches of the season remaining including this one, the visitors need a near-miracle to survive, and making that miracle even harder is the fact that they must travel to a side with genuine motivation to win.

Head to Head: Recent History

The head-to-head record between these two clubs shows Besiktas have historically enjoyed the upper hand, though this fixture has not always been a formality.

The most relevant piece of context for Sunday is the reverse fixture, played at Karagumruk’s temporary home in November 2025, which Besiktas won 2-0.

Jota Silva put the visitors ahead on 41 minutes, and El Bilal Toure wrapped the game up on 71, with Besiktas doing enough without being truly tested.

Before that, the two sides met in the Super Lig in January 2024, with Besiktas winning 3-0 at home, goals from Semih Kilicsoy, Milot Rashica and Gedson Fernandes making it a comfortable afternoon for the home side.

The fixture from August 2023 at the start of that campaign saw Besiktas travel and win 1-0 through a late Gedson Fernandes goal, underlining a consistent ability to get results in this particular rivalry.

Going further back, the two sides drew 1-1 in January 2023 in Istanbul, which represents Karagumruk’s last point against the Black Eagles.

Overall, Besiktas hold the stronger record in the history of this matchup, and the recent run of results confirms they are the team to beat heading into Sunday’s encounter.

Team News: Outs, Doubts and Predicted XIs

The injury picture for Besiktas appears fairly clean ahead of this one.

Earlier-season concerns around defender Felix Uduokhai and Tayyib Sanuc, who picked up a direct red card, appear to have run their course, with both players’ expected return dates now well passed.

Orkun Kokcu, Besiktas’s standout performer this term with seven goals and seven assists from central midfield, remains fit and is expected to captain the side with Ndidi providing the defensive shield alongside him.

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full”><img decoding=”async” width=”7326″ height=”4884″ src=”https://www.afrik-foot.com/en-ng/thumbor/txmeBUb6O4sOXTVo5GX1eBkhgF0=/7326×4884/smart/filters:format(webp)/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-ng%2F2026%2F04%2Fimago1075829687.jpg” alt=”Jota Silva of Besiktas celebrates after scoring the second goal of his team with teammates during the Trendyol Süper Lig match between Besiktas JK and Antalyaspor at Tupras Stadium on April 10, 2026 in Istanbul, Turkey” class=”wp-image-913163″/>
Jota Silva and Besiktas teammates. Photo by ImagoxSeskimPhoto

Vaclav Cerny has been effective on the wing throughout the season and should retain his place, while Oh Hyun-Gyu and Jota Silva compete for the forward positions in support of the attack.

For Karagumruk, midfielder Matias Kranevitter had yellow-card concerns earlier, but he is now available to play.

Brazilian forward Serginho is their most reliable goal threat with eight goals in 29 appearances this season and should lead the attack.

Midfielder Daniel Johnson has shown moments of quality and could feature in central areas, albeit Bartug Elmaz has been preferred recently. Sam Larsson provides some creativity from wide positions, so he should also be named in the starting XI.

Also, goalkeeper Ivo Grbic is expected to start between the posts.

Aleksandar Stanojevic, who took over in late December, has not been able to arrest the slide significantly, and it remains to be seen how much tactical shape he can impose on a squad that has clearly lost confidence at this stage of the season.

Predicted XI – Besiktas (4-3-3): Ersin Destanoglu; Tayyib Sanuc, Felix Uduokhai, Kartal Yilmaz, Devrim Sahin; Vaclav Cerny, Wilfred Ndidi, Orkun Kokcu; Cengiz Under, Oh Hyun-Gyu, Jota Silva.

Predicted XI – Fatih Karagumruk (4-4-2): Ivo Grbic; Ricardo Esgaio, Igor Lichnovsky, Davide Biraschi, Filip Mladenovic; Sam Larsson, Daniel Johnson, Matias Kranevitter, Berkay Ozcan; Serginho, Tiago Cukur.

The Managers

Sergen Yalcin is one of Turkish football’s most storied figures, a man who as a player was described by observers as the kind of midfielder who could make time stand still with a touch.

His second managerial return to Besiktas in August 2025, following Solskjaer’s dismissal, has been a considerable success, and he has rebuilt confidence in a squad that looked uncertain of its identity under its predecessor.

Yalcin is the only person in Turkish football to have won the Super Lig both as a player and as a manager with Besiktas, and his pedigree demands respect from players and fans alike.

He is known for instilling attacking intent alongside defensive organisation, and his squad appears comfortable expressing itself at Tupras Stadium.

On the other side of the technical area sits Aleksandar Stanojevic, the Serbian manager who was appointed by Karagumruk in late December 2025 after the previous coaching staff’s departure.

Stanojevic brings genuine continental experience to the role, having won two league titles and a cup with Partizan in Serbia, and having also managed in Asian Champions League football and in the Super Lig previously with Konyaspor in 2022-23.

He is not coming into the Turkish top flight blind, but the task he inherited at Karagumruk was an enormous one, and the results since his arrival have not improved sufficiently to suggest the gap to safety can be bridged.

Sunday represents exactly the sort of match where Stanojevic will need every ounce of his tactical experience if he is to conjure anything from the game.

Tactical Preview: How the Sides Could Line Up

Besiktas have operated predominantly in a 4-3-3 shape under Yalcin, built around the central dynamism of Orkun Kokcu, who acts as both a creative force and a goal threat in a role not entirely unlike a modern number eight.

Behind him, Wilfred Ndidi’s presence as the defensive anchor allows Kokcu the freedom to drive forward, and it is a partnership that has given Besiktas genuine balance this season.

The wide forwards are encouraged to cut inside and combine with the striker, and at home Besiktas press aggressively from the front, looking to win the ball high up the pitch and transition quickly.

Their weakness, on the evidence of some away performances this term, is when the press is beaten and the central areas are left exposed, but against a side as low on confidence and goals as Karagumruk, those risks are considerably smaller here.

Karagumruk under Stanojevic have tended to set up in a compact 4-4-2, sitting deep and looking to defend their shape, then relying on Serginho’s individual quality to create something from limited possession.

The problem with that approach against a side with Besiktas’s firepower is that it only works if the defensive line holds, and Karagumruk have conceded more goals than anyone else in the division by a significant margin.

The gap in technical quality in the wide areas is stark, and Besiktas’s full-backs pushing forward on both sides should create overloads that Karagumruk will find extremely difficult to cope with.

If the visitors do create anything, it is likely to come from a set-piece or a moment of Serginho invention, which means Besiktas will need to defend dead-ball situations diligently.

Overall, the tactical matchup strongly favours the hosts, and the most likely avenue to a competitive scoreline for Karagumruk is if Besiktas take the lead early and allow their guard to drop slightly as a result.

<p style=”margin: 0 0 10px 0;”>The numbers point firmly in one direction here, and there is very little reason to argue with them.

<p style=”margin: 0 0 10px 0;”>Besiktas at home against the worst defensive team in the division is about as reliable a situation as you will find in Turkish football this season, and Sergen Yalcin’s men have too much motivation, too much quality and too much momentum on their own ground to be denied.

<p style=”margin: 0 0 10px 0;”>The 2-0 scoreline reflects Karagumruk’s ability to frustrate at times, but also their near-total inability to convert chances at the other end, having managed just 27 goals across 30 league games.

<p style=”margin: 0;”>With Orkun Kokcu pulling the strings and Ndidi providing the platform behind him, two goals for the hosts without reply is the outcome that most closely fits the pattern of the season for both clubs.
