The Jacksonville Jaguars did not pick a quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft, but they did reportedly sign one in undrafted free agency.
According to Tom Pelissero, the Jaguars are signing Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar.
Let’s break down this addition.
Why did the Jaguars sign QB Joey Aguilar?
The Jaguars have been doing their homework on the quarterback position this draft cycle. At the game’s most important position, it’s never a bad idea to continually search for young, high upside, developmental talent. Aguilar will compete with Carter Bradley for the Jaguars’ QB3 role.
What to know about Joey Aguilar
After spending a few years at Appalachian State, Aguilar made the jump to the SEC in 2025. Despite the elevated level of competition, Aguilar’s completion rate increased significantly. He also created more big plays through the air, while throwing 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Following last year’s draft, James Gladstone mentioned how impressed he was that Jalen McLeod made the jump in competition but remained productive.
Joey Aguilar’s draft profile
Here is what NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft scouting report:
“Compact, durable quarterback who has climbed levels twice and had success. Aguilar will be a 25-year-old rookie with three seasons of FBS experience. He played in a system heavy on play-action at Tennessee, but his touchdown production and overall consistency dipped after an explosive early stretch in 2025. He dissects zone defenses with adequate processing speed and decisiveness, but tight-window throws are a challenge. Whether on- or off-platform, he makes receivers work too hard for their catches with inconsistent placement and a lack of touch underneath. He’s tough in the pocket and proved he could make plays under pressure. Aguilar’s age shouldn’t work against him, but he must prove he can work through pro progressions and throw with better accuracy to earn a backup job.”
