Baylor Scheierman has steadily asserted himself as a reliable bench presence in the Boston Celtics’ postseason series against the Philadelphia 76ers. He’s stepped up when needed on the defensive end, often picking up one of the Sixers best scoring talents in Tyrese Maxey, Paul George or VJ Edgecombe and has been reliable when shooting the ball or grabbing key rebounds.
On Sunday, April 26, Scheierman came off the bench to drop 6 points, grab five rebounds and play some solid defense. Both of his makes came from deep. When speaking to the media after the game, Jaylen Brown jokingly revealed Scheierman’s nickname within the locker room, courtesy of his shot-making skills.
“Baylor’s been big time, you know,” Brown said, via NBC Sports Boston. “We call him Big Shot Bob. He makes timely plays, timely baskets, and those rebounds are big for us. So, his development has been great as well. Sometimes it falls off the radar with all the other guys we have, but Baylor has been very significant to our success. And tonight was an example of just in his minutes, he just won. You know, every little play. And on top of that, made some big shots. So, big time game from Baylor.”
With Boston’s win on Sunday, they moved to 3-1 in their opening round series against the Sixers. The bench unit played a key role in that victory, with Payton Pritchard leading the second unit in scoring, dropping 32 points in what was an impressive showing.
The Celtics will now head back to Boston for game five. Scheierman and the rest of the bench unit will need to continue stepping up when needed. If they can do that, Boston could earn itself some all-important rest ahead of the second round.
