The Green Bay Packers are still looking for a way to bolster their QB depth chart.

That included a consideration as the 2026 NFL Draft went along.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Packers wanted to sign LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier as an undrafted free agent.

But after a huge slide, the Kansas City Chiefs took Nussmeier in the seventh round, so he never reached that point.

“The Packers searched for quarterback help last week,” Fowler wrote. “Green Bay showed interest in signing LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier if he went undrafted (the Chiefs nabbed him in the seventh round).”

Nussmeier was viewed by many as a third- or fourth-round pick. There still hasn’t been a full explanation as to why he slid as far as he did, although injuries in his final year at LSU to his abdominal area may have been part of the concern.

If the Packers had really wanted him that much, they could’ve used a pick on him well before the seventh round.

Instead, it sounds like it was something they would’ve liked but didn’t want to risk overpaying for.

That meant Green Bay didn’t get Nussmeier, a blow as they continue to search for a backup QB after the departure of Malik Willis.

The Packers did sign an undrafted free agent QB, Kyron Drones out of Virginia Tech. Drones is a quality dual-threat player, although it’s not clear whether his game will really translate to the NFL.

And the Chiefs may have found themselves a new long-term backup by snagging Nussmeier only a chunk of picks until the draft ended.
