William Osula: Super Eagles target backed for bigger role at Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has revealed his decision on the future of Super Eagles target William Osula, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Denmark-born forward was on target again last weekend, helping the Magpies end a five-game losing streak across all competitions. Newcastle had suffered four consecutive Premier League defeats during that run, which had dashed their hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.

Osula opened the scoring in the 3-1 win over Brighton at St James’ Park and remained a constant threat to their backline throughout the encounter. He was eventually substituted in the 68th minute to a warm ovation from the home supporters for his performance, with Yoane Wissa coming on for him.

The 22-year-old joined Newcastle from Sheffield United in 2024 and has had to be patient for opportunities. However, he now appears to be hitting top form for the club, taking his tally to seven goals in all competitions, including four in his last six Premier League appearances.

Last summer, Osula faced uncertainty over his place in the squad following the big-money arrivals of Nick Woltemade and Wissa. However, inconsistent performances from the duo have opened the door for him and he has taken full advantage of the chance given to him with impressive output for the club.

Newcastle may still look to strengthen their attack in the upcoming transfer window after a difficult campaign, but Howe believes Osula remains a major part of the club’s long-term plans.

<blockquote class=”wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow”>

“We signed him with the view of developing him and trying to build him to become a Premier League player, because that certainly wasn’t the player we recruited”, Howe said, via BBC Sport.

<blockquote class=”wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow”>

“He has done really well to stay stable, commit to that development and see the longer-term plan.

<blockquote class=”wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow”>

“It is great to see that when he comes into the team and gets an opportunity, he grabs it. He is very hungry, motivated and believes in himself. I think he has a really bright future”, the Newcastle boss concluded

Super Eagles await Osula’s international decision

At international level, Osula faces a major decision regarding his future, given the recent approach of the Nigeria Football Federation about switching allegiance to represent the Super Eagles.

The 22-year-old was born in Denmark to a Nigerian-French father and raised in England and has already represented Denmark at youth level, while he has also received two senior call-ups. However, he is yet to make his senior debut, leaving him eligible to play for Nigeria, France, or England.

The Newcastle forward must now decide which nation to commit to, with Nigeria hopeful that he will choose to be part of their long-term rebuild.

For now, Osula’s focus will be on finishing the season strongly in Newcastle’s remaining Premier League fixtures, as he looks to secure a more regular role next season.
