Wolves Women are celebrating after being promoted to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2, (WSL2).
The team beat Plymouth Argyle Women at the Pirelli Stadium, the home of League One club Burton Albion FC, to reach the second tier in women’s football.
Charlotte Greengrass scored the only goal with Wolves’ goalkeeper Alex Brooks named player of the match.
Praise for the team has poured in on social media, including from Wolves ambassador and television presenter Suzi Perry, along with supporters from other women’s football teams and the FA Women’s National League.
Manager Dan McNamara told BBC News ahead of the match that the team had experience and had been unlucky, but promotion would bring more investment and “logistically what was needed to compete”.
Winning Monday’s match and gaining promotion meant the club would be “the first part-time club to do it for years” he said.
However, WSL criteria now meant that teams in the top two leagues must operate as full-time professionals he added.
