Phil Foden and Manchester City agree new long-term contract
  • Homegrown superstar Phil Foden is on the verge of extending his stay at his boyhood club until at least June 2030, bringing his total association with Manchester City to over two decades.
  • Foden employed the expertise of world-renowned super-agent Rafaela Pimenta – who famously manages teammate Erling Haaland – to guide negotiations.
  • The contract breakthrough comes at a crucial developmental crossroad, with the 25-year-old looking to win back his regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City have agreed in principle a new long-term contract with Phil Foden and his representatives, it has been reported.

The news arrives during a highly intensive week at the Etihad Stadium as City navigate a gruelling, season-defining title race, sitting five points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Everton on Monday night.

Behind the scenes, the club’s hierarchy has been working tirelessly to secure the long-term foundations of the squad, particularly following the confirmed summer departures of club stalwarts Bernardo Silva and John Stones.

For Phil Foden, committing his future to the club is a significant statement of intent during what has been a testing period, having recently found himself starting mostly on the bench under Pep Guardiola, with his last Premier League start coming in early March.

Despite a dip in domestic starts, the 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Season remains central to City’s future plans, having already amassed an extraordinary collection of silverware – including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City close in on Foden contract extension

Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Phil Foden is set to commit his future to Manchester City after reaching an agreement in principle with the club over a new four-year contract until the summer of 2030, plus the option to extend by a further 12 months.

It is stated that while formalities still need to be completed before the 25-year-old formally puts pen to paper, both parties hold a desire to continue together.

The report further reveals that Phil Foden had turned to the leading agent Rafaela Pimenta – who also represents Erling Haaland – to help guide the next stage of his career, with the Brazilian intermediary having handled all negotiations with those at the Etihad Stadium.

Foden faces battle to earn back starting Man City role

Securing Phil Foden’s signature is a major coup for Sporting Director Hugo Viana, who is preparing for his second summer transfer window in charge of Manchester City’s first-team recruitment.

With Bernardo Silva exiting, Foden is likely to step back into his favoured central attacking midfield role on a more permanent basis for the 2026/27 campaign, should he remain encouraging through his training ground showings.

This long-term commitment also safeguards Manchester City from rival European giants, who are likely to have been closely monitoring Phil Foden’s contract status – which was previously set to expire in June 2027.

Phil Foden’s numbers show adaptation rather than decline

While administrative details are ironed out ahead of the official announcement, Foden’s immediate focus remains firmly on the present, with the midfielder no doubt pushing for a start highly anticipated FA Cup Final against Chelsea on May 16.

Proving his form in these final games will not only aid Manchester City’s hunt for a domestic treble but will also solidify his place in Thomas Tuchel’s upcoming England FIFA World Cup squad in North America this summer.
