Chiefs TE John Michael Gyllenborg ranks among the top UDFA signings

The Kansas City Chiefs assembled one of the best classes of undrafted free agents coming off the end of the 2026 NFL Draft. Some of the team’s top additions include Duke edge rusher Vincent Anthony Jr., Cincinnati wide receiver Jeff Caldwell and Wyoming tight end John Michael Gyllenborg.

In his final season, Gyllenborg didn’t deliver on the promise he flashed in 2024 because of injuries and poor quarterback play. However, he is still a unique athlete for the position who is still developing. Gyllenborg played fewer than four full games in high school before entering college. There’s still a lot of room for him to grow as a player.

Gyllenborg is an explosive 6’5 3/4″, 249 lb. athlete who tested in the 87th percentile for tight ends in the 40-yard dash and the 96th percentile in the broad jump. His speed makes him a threat to quickly stack linebackers on seam routes, and his post-catch acceleration tests safety pursuit angles. Gyllenborg is more than just a linear athlete. He sinks his hips at the top of the stem and explodes out of breaks to create separation.

While at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., earlier this year, Gyllenborg spoke about his ability to separate as a route runner, his development after a limited high school career and the areas of his game he plans to build upon in the NFL.

Gyllenborg thrives working on over routes and on a vertical route tree. He also offers some value on schemed touches or drags because of his ability to generate extra yards with his speed. Over the past two seasons, Gyllenborg showcased improvement in his ability to manipulate the defender’s leverage versus man coverage and his quickness locating holes between the defense’s second and third level zones.

Gyllenborg needs to improve as an in-line blocker. This is an area of his game that stagnated over the past few seasons and represents his biggest obstacle to sticking in the league. Based on pure receiving ability and potential along, Gyllenborg could push Jake Briningstool and Jared Wiley for one of the final spots on Kansas City’s roster. However, he must find a way to contribute on run downs.
