With Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho both left out of the squad due to knocks, Derry was handed his first Chelsea start.
Derry had already made two appearances in the FA Cup this season, but this was the 18-year-old’s Premier League debut.
Jesse Derry provides injury update
It wasn’t the debut Derry would have been looking for with the Blues putting in another poor performance as they lost 3-1, their sixth league defeat in a row.
Things also ended badly for Derry on a personal level after a nasty clash of heads with Zach Abbot, which resulted in Chelsea being awarded a penalty.
Derry received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken to hospital for precautionary checks.
However, despite initial concern, Derry appears to be in good spirits and has provided an update on his situation.
He took to Instagram and said:
“A dream come true to start at Stamford Bridge for my Premier League debut,” he wrote.
“I’d like to thank all the Chelsea medical staff, everyone at St Mary’s Hospital, my teammates, and all the fans for their great support.
“I can’t wait to be back playing in front of everyone very soon.”
