Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer admitted his side lacked the clinical edge needed to overcome Paris Saint Germain after their Champions League semi final exit on Wednesday night.
PSG progressed to the final after securing a 6-5 aggregate victory over Bayern following a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.
The German giants entered the tie hoping to keep their treble ambitions alive, but ultimately fell short against a ruthless PSG side that punished their missed opportunities across both legs.
Bayern found themselves trailing after just three minutes and spent most of the match chasing the game despite dominating possession for long periods.
Speaking after the defeat, Neuer said Bayern failed to show the same efficiency in front of goal as the French champions.
“I think we didn’t have the killer instinct in attack today,” Neuer said.
“We didn’t have many clear cut chances, but we still created enough to score.”
PSG’s attacking quality proved decisive once again, especially after their five goal performance in the first leg in Paris.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany also admitted his side needed to be more decisive in key moments.
“Of course it’s bitter. In the end we lost both games against a very good opponent. We needed to be more decisive,” Kompany said.
“The Champions League is over for us this season, but there will be another chance and that’s a motivation for me.”
England captain Harry Kane managed to score an equaliser deep into stoppage time, but Bayern needed another goal to force extra time.
Neuer praised PSG’s ruthless finishing and admitted Bayern simply could not match it.
“Look at Paris. They were simply killers, scoring five goals the way they did in the first leg,” he added.
“That’s exactly what we needed today. I think you could see that we were actually close to reaching the final, but we weren’t able to finish the job.”
The veteran goalkeeper also noted that Bayern’s late goal came too late to spark a comeback despite strong support from the home crowd.
PSG will now face Arsenal in the Champions League final on May 30 as they attempt to defend their European crown.
