Florida State softball’s road to a 20th ACC tournament title takes the Seminoles down a road against a recent opponent in Stanford.
The top-ranked Seminoles (47-8) face the four-seeded Cardinal (36-12), in the ACC tournament semifinals on Friday, May 8 at Palmer Park in Charlottesville, Virginia. Stanford is the only team this season to sweep FSU in a three-game series, beating the Seminoles in April to end a 25-game winning streak.
FSU enters the rematch with the Cardinal on the back of a 2-1 win over Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament quarterfinals. The Seminoles leaned on strong defense and pitching to clinch a spot in the semifinals. Stanford outlasted Louisville in a game that featured more pop, winning 6-5 in extra innings to advance.
The Cardinal led 5-4 in the seventh, but Louisville tied the game to force extra innings on a bases-loaded walk. In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and no out, Stanford’s River Mahler hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to win the game.
In the series earlier this season, Stanford twice walked off FSU, with one coming in extra innings in the first ACC meeting of the two squads. The tournament semifinal will be only the seventh meeting between the programs, with the Cardinal leading the series 4-2 over the Seminoles since the first meeting in 2013.
