Bucs GM Licht shares unique view of Rueben Bain Jr. as a prospect

Jason Licht gave a revealing look into how Tampa Bay evaluated Rueben Bain Jr. before the draft, making it clear the organization prioritized impact over traditional measurements.

Speaking during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Licht said the Buccaneers viewed Bain as “a problem, not a prototype” before calling him “a game wrecker.”

That perspective helps explain why Tampa Bay stayed aggressive on Bain despite outside conversations surrounding arm length and prototype concerns throughout the pre-draft process. The Buccaneers clearly valued disruption and play impact more than checking every physical measurement box.

That approach also fits how Todd Bowles has historically built defenses. Tampa Bay consistently leans toward defenders capable of creating pressure and forcing offenses to adjust protections, even if those players do not fit a traditional mold perfectly.

Bain now enters a defense where immediate snaps are available. Tampa Bay spent much of the offseason searching for more pass-rush production, and Licht’s comments suggest the organization believes Bain can help solve that issue early in his career.
