Liverpool could now resurrect collapsed €90m transfer

Liverpool have been given a chance to put new life into a collapsed transfer.

Richard Hughes looked into two major transfers for his debut window in charge of Liverpool. One of those was Martin Zubimendi, who eventually signed for Arsenal a year later.

In fact, Liverpool pushed hard for Zubimendi. A deal was all but done, only for the midfielder to change his mind at the last moment.

But that wasn’t all. Liverpool were also reasonably close to an agreement for Anthony Gordon as Newcastle United needed to sell players to meet Premier League PSR rules.

It was a specific deal. Liverpool would sign Gordon but also send Joe Gomez the other way as both clubs got what they were chasing at the time.

However, Newcastle would sell other players instead, opting to keep Gordon. Now it’s 2026 and a similar situation and opportunity has arisen.

Florian Plettenberg is one of those reporting that Newcastle are willing to sell Gordon. They’d want €90m for the player and Liverpool have been informed on the situation.

But it’s also a summer where Gomez has a very uncertain future. He’s entering the final year of his contract and Liverpool have already confirmed the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet for next season.

Gomez’s place looks under threat as a result and it was already a position that limited his minutes. An exit feels incredibly likely, which opens the door for that part-exchange deal that was close two years ago.

Now, Gomez will not carry as much weight in a deal as he did in 2024 because of that short contract. Still, it’s a way in for Liverpool and something that might help them in negotiations – a leg up over the likes of Bayern Munich.

Anthony Gordon: Situation Summary

Newcastle Performance and Stats

As of 8 May 2026, Anthony Gordon remains a central figure for Newcastle United, despite a challenging league campaign for the club. The 25-year-old winger has recorded 18 goals across all competitions this season, including 10 during an impressive Champions League run. In the Premier League, he has contributed six goals and two assists over 26 appearances (1,814 minutes), maintaining an average FotMob rating of 6.96. Gordon was an unused substitute in Newcastle’s 3–1 win over Brighton on 2 May, having recently returned from a hip injury.

Transfer Speculation

Gordon is heavily linked with a move away from St James’ Park this summer. Bayern Munich have reportedly opened formal talks and presented a “concrete” five-year contract offer. Arsenal also hold strong interest, while Liverpool—who previously moved for him in 2024—continue to monitor the situation. Newcastle reportedly value the England international at over £75 million.
