Sporting Jax men score in Indy, but not enough

Skid continues in Indy: The scoreless drought ended but the losing streak didn’t for Sporting Club Jacksonville men’s soccer, going down 2-1 to the Indy Eleven in USL Championship on May 9 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

Al-Qaq finds net: After the team had gone scoreless for 523 consecutive minutes, Ahmad Al-Qaq finally ended the drought for Sporting Jax (0-8-1), putting away Emil Jaaskelainen’s assist for a short-lived 45th-minute lead.

Indy races back: Again, Sporting Jax’s struggles defending corner kicks proved fatal. Both Indy goals occurred following corners, with Bruno Rendon converting Aodhan Quinn’s cross in the 51st minute and Anthony Herbert heading the 65th-minute game-winner.

Quick free kicks: Al-Qaq’s goal was the only one of nine shots to hit the target for Sporting Jax, while Indy (3-2-3) attempted 26 shots and put ninne of them on the net. … Sporting Jax keeper Christian Olivares made seven saves. … Former University of North Florida midfielder Luc Granitur started for Sporting Jax. … Jack Blake, formerly with the Jacksonville Armada during the 2017 North American Soccer League season, played all 90 minutes for Indy.

Up next: Sporting Jax next steps outside league competition for midweek action against third-level opponent Sarasota Paradise in the USL Cup tournament at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch.
