Former Ouachita football coach Benjy Lewis is now an administrator

MONROE — Benjy Lewis has stepped into a new role five months after leading Ouachita Parish High School to a football state championship.

The West Ouachita and ULM alumnus resigned from coaching the Lions on Monday and accepted a job as an assistant principal at Good Hope Middle School.

Lewis coached football over the last 23 years with previous stops at Jena, West Ouachita, Richwood and Neville. He was Ouachita’s defensive coordinator for two seasons prior to taking over as head coach in 2023.

The Lions went 18-18 in Lewis’ three seasons at the helm and will graduate multiple players bound for Division I programs, including defensive tackle Dylan Berymon, who signed with Nebraska in February. Ouachita defeated Ruston in last fall’s D-I nonselect championship, its first since 1989.
