Former Los Angeles Rams and USC tight end Charle Young has died at age 75.
His wife informed the San Francisco 49ers of Young’s death on Tuesday. Young helped the 49ers win the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 1982 when San Francisco defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl XVI. During that season, Young caught 37 catches for 400 yards and five touchdowns.
Before joining the 49ers, Young also helped the Rams reach Super Bowl XIV during the 1979 season. He caught three passes for 39 yards in the NFC Championship game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Young was one of the best players entering the 1973 NFL Draft. He helped USC win a national championship in 1972 and was named an AP All-American. Across three seasons with the Trojans, Young logged 62 catches for 998 yards and 10 touchdowns. He earned a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
He played 13 total seasons in the NFL after the Philadelphia Eagles drafted him out of USC with the No. 6 overall pick. After stints with the Eagles, 49ers and Rams, Young played for the Seattle Seahawks for the final three seasons of his career.
In his rookie season with the Eagles, Young earned first-team All-Pro honors when he recorded 55 catches for 854 yards and six touchdowns. He went on to earn second-team All-Pro honors in the following two seasons.
