22-year-old could be Liverpool’s pick to replace Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez may leave Liverpool this summer. A 22-year-old from France may replace him.

Joe Gomez nearly left Liverpool last summer and if Marc Guehi had arrived, we imagine he would have. Instead, Gomez has stuck around for one more season but he enters the final year of his contract in July.

The Reds will likely accept offers for their longest-serving player as a result and we’re sure there’s interest. But any sale would mean a replacement arriving, especially with uncertainties over Giovanni Leoni’s post-injury state as well as Jeremy Jacquet’s post-surgery state.

It seems there’s a contender for the position in Samson Baidoo. The 22-year-old has had a fantastic debut campaign with Ligue 1 contenders RC Lens and there’s now plenty of interest in him.

That’s according to TuttoJuve, who say Juventus face stiff competition from the likes of Liverpool, who have tracked Baidoo for some time. Though, again, we would only expect Liverpool to actually pursue a transfer if Gomez were to depart.

That’s very, very possible. Baidoo is one to remember, then, as he may be the Reds’ pick for a key role next season

Samson Baidoo: Situation Summary

Lens Performance and Stats

As of 12 May 2026, Samson Baidoo has established himself as a rising star in Ligue 1 following his July 2025 move to Lens. The 22-year-old Austrian centre-back has recorded two goals and one assist across 1,677 minutes this season, maintaining a strong average FotMob rating of 7.26. He played the full 90 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Nice on 2 May and most recently featured in a 90-minute defensive shift against Nantes on 8 May, recording 10 clearances. Known for his aerial presence and ball-playing ability, Baidoo currently boasts a 92.6% pass completion rate.

Transfer Speculation

Baidoo’s stock has risen rapidly, with reports from 11 May indicating a “European heavyweight battle” is brewing. Manchester City, Liverpool, and Juventus have all been linked with the €30 million-rated defender. City, led by Hugo Viana, are reportedly tracking him as a potential replacement for John Stones.
