Super Bowl-winning 49ers TE Charlie Young dies at 75

Tight end Charlie Young, who helped the San Francisco 49ers win their first-ever Super Bowl in 1981, has died at the age of 75. The team confirmed Young’s death on social media. No cause of death has been announced.

Young played 13 seasons in the NFL from 1973 to 1985 for the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles drafted Young with the No. 6 pick out of USC in 1973, where he made the Pro Bowl in three of his four seasons in Philadelphia and made the first-team All-Pro as a rookie.

The Eagles traded Young to the Rams in 1977 for quarterback Ron Jaworski, where Young played for the next three seasons and made his first Super Bowl in 1979. The Rams then traded Young to the 49ers in 1980 for a 1983 fifth-round pick in 1983.

Young went on to help San Francisco win the Super Bowl the following season. He caught seven passes for 81 yards and one touchdown during that playoff run. Young finished his NFL career with three seasons in Seattle.

In his career, Young caught 197 total receptions for 2,583 yards and 12 touchdowns.
