The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball have had an impressive portal season, putting together one of the top transfer classes in the country this spring. Even after landing several major names, the Vols still have one final roster spot available.

Tennessee has really only suffered one notable miss during the entire portal cycle, and that came in the recruitment of seven-foot high school prospect Favour Ibe.

“7-foot-1 center Favour Ibe has committed to Virginia, he told Rivals. The four-star big man is the No. 82 overall recruit in the 2026 class, per Rivals. He also made visits to Tennessee, Alabama, and Villanova,” On3’s Joe Tipton posted.

After missing out on Ibe, the Vols quickly shifted their attention elsewhere. One player Tennessee appeared to show interest in was transfer center Austin Maurer, another seven-footer.

“There are still some options available in the transfer portal as the Vols look for another rim protector. Seattle transfer Austin Maurer, 7-foot/235 pounds from Medford, OR, is ranked by 247Sports as the top available center in the portal,” A To Z Sports’ Zach Ragan wrote.

With the available options continuing to shrink, head coach Rick Barnes understands that the market for experienced big men is becoming increasingly limited. Maurer would have been a strong final portal addition for Tennessee, but he ultimately committed to Stanford University. His decision officially signaled that Barnes is beginning to run out of high-quality options at center.

“Given the amount of scoring that Tennessee has added via the portal, I think it’s safe to assume that Barnes will be looking for a defense-first type of big man. Seattle transfer Austin Maurer, 7-foot/235 pounds from Medford, OR, was ranked by 247Sports as the top available center in the portal, but he signed with Stanford on Monday, so quality options are dwindling,” Ragan wrote.

Barnes has already assembled a very strong roster for next season, but it now appears likely that Tennessee’s final addition could be more of a developmental piece than an immediate-impact player. There is nothing wrong with that approach, especially if the player can develop into an important contributor down the line.

Still, in today’s college basketball landscape, it can be difficult to convince players to join a roster when major minutes may not immediately be available. Tennessee will now have to be patient and strategic as Barnes makes his final roster decision.
