A space is opening up on the right side of Liverpool’s attack.
Mohamed Salah is leaving having reached an agreement to rip up his £400k per week contract one year early. That means Arne Slot will be seeking a high-quality replacement.
And Sports Boom is now reporting that the Reds could be about to repeat their Salah trick – and snare a Roma forward once again like they did in the case of Salah back in 2017.
Matias Soulé has emerged on the transfer radar as a potential Salah replacement – but Liverpool will have to watch out for interest from Arsenal as well as other teams towards the top of the Prem table.
Liverpool in race for Roma’s Soulé
“AS Roma’s Matías Soulé is set to be at the centre of a Premier League transfer tug-of-war this summer, with several Europe-chasing clubs already registering interest in the Argentine winger,” the report reads.
“Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Brighton have all demonstrated their admirations on several occasions.”
Soule is valued at around €40m and Richard Hughes could take advantage of a decent price for one of the most inventive forwards in Serie A.
Soulé wants Liverpool or Arsenal
Although the left-footer is not right at the top of the Reds’ recruitment shortlist he is believed to be holding out for bid from either the Anfield side or Arsenal.
“Arsenal and Liverpool are no strangers to the skill of the Argentine winger, even if they haven’t got the 23-year-old at the top of their long-short list,” the report reads.
“He has had a couple of meetings with his agents to see if Mikel Arteta or Arne Slot feel the need for a left footed player who can thrive when tightly marked and pose a real goal threat from the flank.
“The Gunners and the Reds haven’t lodged an official bid just yet, but they will keep a close eye on the Argentine.
“He has been considered as one of many right forwards to potentially replace Mohamed Salah at Anfield when he decides to leave.
“Should Soulé decide to wait out, then he stands every chance of arriving at that “dream transfer” which will shape his career forever.”
Soulé also wanted in Germany
Soulé has got six goals and five assists for the Italian capital side in Serie A this season having inked a deal until 2029 from Juventus in 2024.
He is also attracting interest from Germany but his future could well be in the Premier League.
“Over in the Bundesliga, we have both Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart who have been interested in the Argentine for some time now,” the report reads.
Matías Soulé: Situation summary
Matías Soulé has quickly become a headline act at Roma, emerging as one of Serie A’s most inventive right-sided attackers.
The 23-year-old Argentine, born in Mar del Plata in April 2003, joined Roma from Juventus in summer 2024 for a fee in the €26–30m region and now operates mainly as a left-footed right winger or attacking midfielder.
Standing around 1.82m, he offers a sleek, agile profile and can also feature centrally or as a second striker when required.
On the pitch, Soulé is a high-usage creator: he hugs the touchline, drives at full-backs with sharp dribbling, then cuts inside to combine or shoot, regularly posting strong progressive carry and shot-creating action numbers.
His game mixes Di María-style ball-carrying with Dybala-esque vision, giving Roma both a ball-progressor and goal threat in one.
Soulé signed a five-year contract to 2029 on roughly €2m net per season plus bonuses, with Juventus retaining a sell-on clause but no public release number.
