Fortunately for the New York Yankees, it seems like starting shortstop Jose Caballero will be back sooner than expected.

Caballero, who has been one of the better players on the roster in the earlier stages of the season, is needed for the Yankees to be the team they’re looking to be. No matter whether that was the case early on in the offseason or not, he’s really played well to begin this year and will be missed for the short amount of time that he’s out.

It remains uncertain exactly when he’ll return, though the earliest signs have been promising from skipper Aaron Boone, who had the latest on when he expects him to return.

“Boone said Caballero fought to avoid going on the IL. He was able to hit in the batting cage without issue on Monday, but his throwing did not feel right. The Yankees believe that, with a few days off to let the fracture heal, the injury should be a “non-issue” when he returns,” Chris Kirschner of The Athletic wrote.

Caballero later added that he only expects to be out for 10 days, which would be the best-case scenario and allow the Yankees to get back to their typical ways after it was evident on Wednesday that Anthony Volpe simply just can’t be the guy that they need for them to play the type of baseball they’re attempting to.

“Ten days, that’s the max I’m taking,” Caballero said of how long he expects to be out.
