Tocoi Creek, Bolles take on FHSAA flag football semifinals

The Florida High School Athletic Association begins the flag football final four for teams across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. The state semifinals begin Friday, May 15, at Tampa’s AdventHealth Training Center.

All schedules are as listed by the FHSAA, but are subject to change.

CLASS 4A SEMIFINAL

Tocoi Creek (12-7) vs. Park Vista (18-0), 1:30 p.m.

The Toros’ memorable run from a 6-7 midseason record and the No. 6 seed in their region has carried them all the way to the final four for the first time in school history. In sophomore Addy Curry (1,697 yards passing, 24 TD; 413 yards rushing, 6 TD), they’ve got one of Northeast Florida’s top all-around players, with Anneliese Herrera, Ansley Helton and Kendall Moreno among several passing targets. On defense, Curry has snatched 11 interceptions, and Jordan Janssen and Kayla Tiner combine for 41 sacks. But top seed Park Vista, which has outscored foes 464-64, will be tough: Jordana Weil (3,329 yards and 54 TD passing) and Sydney Hock (120 catches, 1,411 yards, 31 TD) make a deadly downfield duo. The winner advances to meet Ruskin Lennard or Harmony in the Class 4A championship at 2 p.m. May 16.

CLASS 1A SEMIFINAL

Bolles (17-2) vs. Miami Edison (17-1), 4:30 p.m.

The first-year Bulldogs are already state semifinalists, amassing 99 points in their three regional victories. Even more promising, this is a young team. Eighth-grader Kayla Bliss is up to 3,071 yards passing with 53 touchdowns, eighth-grader Patricia Freeman has 13 touchdown catches to go with 876 receiving yards and the defense, including Freeman (17 interceptions) and senior Leila Goll (13 interceptions) has forced 45 takeaways. Edison moves the ball in the air with Rakyia Louis (3,558 yards, 53 TD) at quarterback and a receiving corps that includes Malaysia David (882 yards, 13 TD), Torri Cotman (858 yards, 14 TD) and Mikeria Miller (601 yards, 7 TD). Pass rushers Talayah Akhdar and Jennifer Burton combine for 55 sacks. The winner meets Tampa Catholic or Somerset Canyons in the Class 1A final at 4 p.m. May 16.
