Seahawks cut ties with high-priced rookie for rare reason

The Seattle Seahawks have decided to waive one of their undrafted free-agent signings, and the reason for doing so is not one you see in the NFL everyday.

According to the NFL transactions wire on Thursday, Seattle cut ties with wide receiver Michael Briscoe, who just signed his contract on May 1.

The rookie was waived with a “failure to disclose physical condition” designation.

While we don’t know the exact issue, the designation is pretty self-explanatory.

Clearly Briscoe had some kind of physical problem he didn’t tell the team about and the Seahawks found out about it. Now, he’s looking for a new NFL home.

Briscoe played his college ball at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

He had his best collegiate season in 2025 with 779 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Briscoe posted 1,765 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns from 2020 through 2025.

According to Spotrac, Michael Briscoe got an above-average UDFA deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

Briscoe inked a three-year, $3.1 million deal with the Seahawks that included $125,000 guaranteed and a $15,000 signing bonus.

Of course, that’s not a huge sum of money as compared to a lot of NFL deals, but it is significant for an undrafted player. That means the Seahawks thought highly of him.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Seahawks will try to recoup some or all of that money because of the designation Briscoe was waived with.

We would say there’s at least a chance that happens.

Rough rookie minicamp

Michael Briscoe did not enjoy much success in rookie minicamp with the Seahawks.

Corbin K. Smith of the Emerald Spectrum reports that Briscoe “dropped several passes in rookie minicamp,” so things weren’t exactly going smoothly for him.

It’s going to be tough sledding for Briscoe to find another NFL opportunity after what transpired in Seattle.

What’s next for the Seahawks?

With rookie minicamp in the rearview mirror, the Seahawks will now turn their attention to Organized Team Activities (OTAs) later this month.

Seattle’s OTAs will begin on May 26, and will also run from May 28-29, on June 1, and from June 3-4, per the team’s offseason schedule.

After that, Seattle will get the entire team together for mandatory minicamp, which runs from June 9-11.

The Seahawks will enjoy a nice summer break following mandatory minicamp and will return for the start of training camp in late July.
