New York Giants, Jets help United Way raise $2.6M for NYC families

United Way of New York City raised $2.6 million at its 33rd Annual Gridiron Gala on May 12, partnering with the New York Giants and Jets to fund programs strengthening community solutions across the five boroughs.

The evening honored four leaders for advancing opportunity for under-resourced New Yorkers.

Giants outside linebacker Brian Burns and Jets defensive lineman Harrison Phillips received Hometown Heroes Awards for their youth-focused nonprofits—the Brian Burns Family Charities (mentorship, autism awareness, animal rescue) and the Harrison’s Playmakers (camps, school visits, and support for children facing hardship).

“I am truly honored to be recognized alongside other inspiring community leaders,” said Burns. “United Way of New York City shares our charities’ vision for a New York City that empowers at-risk youth and supports families. This recognition is for everyone who has supported this work.”

Kathryn Wylde, former president and CEO of Partnership for New York City, was presented the Community Quarterback Award for decades of public-private collaboration, including post-9/11 recovery and COVID-19 response.

Broadridge Financial Solutions President Chris Perry received the George Irish MVP Award for his board service and commitment to community health.

Hosted by ESPN Radio host and Giants alum Chris Canty and reporter Tina Cervasio, with a performance by Broadway’s Norm Lewis, the gala spotlighted the city’s affordability crisis: 56% of households (4.7 million people) struggle to afford housing, childcare, healthcare, food, and transportation.

“No one organization can tackle New York City’s affordability crisis alone,” said UWNYC President and CEO Grace Bonilla. “It takes an entire team.”

Funds will expand critical services and long-term economic opportunities for ALICE families citywide.
