UNC football lands defensive back in 2027 class

Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels are still months away from opening up their 2026 season, the second in the head coach’s tenure. After a bad 2025, UNC is hoping to rebound and show some hope for the future of the program.

But the future of the program also includes recruiting classes.

On Friday, the Tar Heels earned another commitment from a prospect in the 2027 class, landing a talented defensive back out of Texas. Three-star defensive back Trey Johnson pledged his commitment to the program on Friday. He did so just a few months after earning the offer from UNC.

Johnson has yet to be on a visit to the program but the communication from the coaches and what the plans are to build up the program were enough to convince him.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Johnson ranks No. 1,265 nationally, No. 121 defensive back and the No. 156 player in the state of Texas per the On3 rankings.

He picked UNC over offers from programs like Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, and Texas Tech.

North Carolina now has five commitments in the 2027 class.
