Yankees place starter Max Fried on IL with bone bruise on left elbow ahead of Subway Series

New York Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried is heading onto the injured list for an undetermined amount of time after being diagnosed with a bone bruise, the team announced Friday. Fried underwent an MRI and CT scan on Thursday, revealing a bone bruise in the pitcher’s left arm.

As a result, the lefty starter was placed on the 15-day IL, with New York saying that he will undergo addition scans in “a few weeks (or when asymptomatic).” At that time, the rehabilitation timeline for Fried will be more clear.

The team added that Dr. Neal ElAttrache, a orthopedic surgeon known for performing surgeries on a number of high-profile athletes, will consult by looking over Fried’s scans.

Fried pitched in the Yankees’ 7-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, allowing five hits and three runs in just three innings before getting pulled. Overall, Fried has built up an ERA of 3.21 across 10 starts.

The announcement came just hours before the start of the Subway Series, with the Yankees traveling to Queens to take on the New York Mets. Yankees ace Cam Schlitter is set to start in Friday’s series opener.

The Yankees have not yet announced any roster moves to replace Fried. That may come later, once the nature of Fried’s injury is a little more clear.
