Guernsey beat Jersey 2-1 to win the Muratti Vase for the second successive year.

Jersey had a host of first-half chances as Karl Hinds missed a penalty before Matt Loaring headed the hosts into a 34th-minute lead.

Veteran forward Ross Allen doubled the advantage 12 minutes after the break from close range.

Toby Ritzema’s close-range effort got Jersey back into it with 27 minutes to go.

But they could not fashion an equaliser as Guernsey won on Jersey soil for the first time since 2014.

Ritzema had two early chances saved by the impressive Josh Addison before he was fouled in the penalty area midway through the first half.

But Hinds’ spot-kick was saved by Addison before the Guernsey goalkeeper did well to stop a follow-up from Jonny Le Quesne, who went on to head wide from the resulting corner.

Guernsey took the lead against the run of play when Brandon Wallace’s cross from the left found the unmarked Loaring, who nodded in from six yards.

Addison continued to keep his side in it before the break as he twice denied Le Quesne and also thwarted Hinds in a performance that earned him the Player of the Match award.

Loaring forced the only save of the day out of Jersey goalkeeper Euan van der Vliet nine minutes after the interval as he got his head to a near-post corner.

Three minutes later, veteran forward Allen made it 2-0 as he got on the end of the best move of the game – Callum Le Lacheur sprayed the ball out to Will Fazakerley on the left wing and the striker’s low cross was met by Allen at the far post.

Jersey pulled a goal back six minutes later as Ritzema was able to convert after Le Quesne had done well in the build-up.

But Jersey could not find the breakthrough again as Adam Trotter managed to blaze an effort over the bar from six yards out with 15 minutes left.

The win was Guernsey’s 49th in the historic fixture, with Jersey on 59 wins and Alderney having won it once.
