Liverpool’s transfer rumour mill has been going into overdrive over the last couple of weeks.
There are so many players within the Reds’ first-team squad that need to be replaced before it’s too late.
Midfielders such as Alexis Mac Allister and attackers such as Cody Gakpo have been a shadow of their former selves and, now that Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are both leaving, there’s going to be some major voids for Liverpool to fill before the start of next season.
Most fans also expected the club to be looking for a new manager but, with the way that things seem to be headed, Arne Slot is likely to stay at the helm.
So, with all these changes needing to occur in such little time, it’s hardly surprising to see new players linked with and Anfield switch almost every day and now, one of the Reds’ reported targets has held a meeting to decide what his future holds.
Konrad Laimer is willing to drop his contract demands to stay at Bayern Munich
Konrad Laimer is far from Bayern Munich’s flashiest player but, whenever he’s called upon, he gets the job done.
The Austrian is a natural defensive midfielder but, with Joshua Kimmich getting on a bit and Josip Stanisic being a much better centre-back than a right-back, Laimer has been shoehorned into that position by Vincent Kompany.
On the ball, he’s a master of the trade and, since he’s already a defensive-minded player, the defensive aspects of being a right-back have hardly phased him.
In fact, the 28-year-old has even been used at left-back this term due to the sheer number of injuries that Alphonso Davies has suffered.
All of these aspects made him a perfect target for Liverpool and, since Bayern and the Austrian couldn’t agree on the terms for a new contract, an Anfield switch was almost on the cards.
But now, an update from German journalist Christian Falkabout one of their potential transfer targets.
“There was a lot of silence last month! The last meeting was in December 2025, but now there has been another meeting to discuss Konrad Laimer’s contract,” he said.
“Now, the Austrian has shown that perhaps he won’t be looking for so much money as he was in the first round of talks.
“For him, it would be nice and important to stay at Bayern Munich. The midfielder-turned-right-back’s family isn’t far away; they live in Salzburg. He has a house in Salzburg that’s about an hour and a half to two hours away from Munich.
“So, he would like to stay at Bayern Munich.
“To make that happen, he’d be happy with a salary that isn’t as high as what was discussed in the first round of talks.
“That said, Laimer is still looking for more money than what he’s currently on. So, the talks will go on. But today, it doesn’t seem as impossible for Bayern to keep him.”
Liverpool could miss out on yet another perfect summer transfer
One thing that Liverpool have been lacking this season is depth.
For example, there have been times this term when Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai have both been used as right-backs.
Indeed, the duo didn’t do all that bad of a job but, in reality, it would make much more sense for someone such as Laimer to come in.
The Austrian is only 28 years old and since he’s been in and around the Bundesliga since the 2017-18 season when he joined RB Leipzig, he’s already got plenty of experience at a top level.
And, since the Reds have already invested heavily into young players with massive potential last season, an experienced head or two would’ve been more than welcome this term.
However, with Laimer willing to accept a deal worth around £10 million-per-year to stay with Bayern, a transfer to Liverpool looks like it’s off the table.
Although this may be a tad upsetting for some fans, as long as Slot and Richard Hughes have a solid plan in place, everything should end up working out.
