Shubman Gill makes an honest admission after dropped catches cost GT two points against KKR

Shubman Gill did not look for excuses after one of Gujarat Titans’ worst evenings on the field against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday at the Eden Gardens.

The GT captain came out and admitted that his team simply did not merit a victory after putting down four catches, three of which were routine opportunities.

KKR, who were desperate for points in their playoff push, punished every single miss without mercy and ran up a score of 247 for 2, the highest total any side has ever put up against Gujarat in IPL history.

Finn Allen, on just 14 at the time, miscued a shot off Mohammed Siraj in the third over, and Jason Holder failed to take the chance in the covers. A few overs later, Siraj himself put down a far more straightforward opportunity at long-on when Allen had reached 33.

He was eventually dismissed for 93 off 35 balls, by which point the total was already beyond reach.

Cameron Green was also handed a second chance when Arshad Khan spilled a catch in the deep with Green on 23. The Australian all-rounder responded by clearing the boundary multiple times in a punishing unbeaten fifty.

And even in the final overs, Washington Sundar dropped Angkrish Raghuvanshi at fine leg, a chance that would have cut short an innings that eventually produced a sensational 82 off 44 balls.

What did Shubman Gill say about GT’s poor fielding?

Gill admitted that the dropped catches made the bowlers’ job impossible, and he made no attempt to deflect responsibility.

“We set a certain standard and dropping three sitters, we didn’t deserve to win this one. Looking at it that way, best to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers,” Gill said after the match.

“Looking at the wicket, we thought 200-220 was a par score. The pitch was good. The odd ball was stopping and sticking. We batted well to the score that we did (218 for 4).  But our fielding could have been a lot better.”

Despite the disappointment, Gill was careful not to let the result spiral into unnecessary concern. He suggested that if Gujarat were going to have a bad day with the ball and concede 240-plus, it was better for that to happen now rather than in the playoff stages.

“Best to have a game like this, 240-250 game, the bowling having an off day, a game like that now than in the qualifiers,” Gill said. “[We] rest and recover for a couple of days, travel back to Ahmedabad, and see how the wicket is and plan accordingly.”

GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel reinforced Gill’s view during the post-match press conference. He said that in high-scoring games against quality opposition, chances come rarely, and when they do arrive, sides must take them.

“I think catching is something which obviously made a huge difference. When you are playing high-scoring games against quality batters, you don’t get many opportunities. As soon as you get that opportunity, you have to make sure you take it, and I thought that was the difference,” Parthiv Patel said after the match.

The Cricket News Opinion: GT’s fielding lapse is a warning they should take seriously

Gujarat Titans have been one of the most composed and disciplined sides in IPL 2026, which is precisely why Saturday night felt so jarring. Four dropped catches, particularly three that had no business hitting the ground, are not just a bad night.

It is a reminder that concentration and intent in the field can vanish without warning, even in teams that pride themselves on those qualities. Gill is right that it is better to have this kind of game before the knockouts.

Gujarat must field at their absolute best when it matters most, because in the playoffs, mercy is in short supply.
