On the night before a full-on war commences, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a chance to celebrate an all-time accolade. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the 2025-26 MVP award winner. He won it by a pretty comfortable margin, too.
It shouldn’t be a shocker to see Gilgeous-Alexander win back-to-back MVP awards. He was the frontrunner for the entire year. By the end of the regular season, the biggest question left was by how much of a margin he’d win it by.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points on 55.3% shooting, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 68 games this season. The Oklahoma City Thunder had a league-best 64-18 record. They walked their way to the Western Conference Finals with a solid chance to go back-to-back.
After the announcement, the NBA released the full voting ballot. There were 100 media voters. Gilgeous-Alexander ran away with the award. He tallied 83 first-place votes, 13 second-place votes, three third-place votes and one fourth-place vote.
Meanwhile, Nikola Jokic finished as a distant runner-up. He had 10 first-place votes, 48 second-place votes, 37 third-place votes, four fourth-place votes and one fifth-place vote. Victor Wembanyama was in third place with five first-place votes, 36 second-place votes, 47 third-place votes, 10 fourth-place votes and two fifth-place votes.
Other players who received voting points were Luka Doncic, Cade Cunningham, Jaylen Brown, Kawhi Leonard and Donovan Mitchell. Aside from those top three, Cunningham collected two first-place votes.
So nothing too crazy. Gilgeous-Alexander was closer to winning unanimously than there being an actual competition for the MVP award. Now, the 27-year-old is part of an exclusive club filled with the NBA’s biggest names ever as multi-time MVP trophy winners.
