Some heartfelt pressers last year and a critical offseason led to questions about the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow.
That is, until the Bengals spent major cash in free agency and made the biggest trade in franchise history when acquiring Dexter Lawrence.
Alas, every now and then, the question of Burrow’s future with the Bengals gets thrown out there again.
After the NFL schedule release, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler chatted with anonymous executives and others around the NFL. One of the executives polled summed up the situation quite nicely.
“I just don’t see them ever moving him,” an AFC executive told Fowler. “I think all of the posturing on his end was to make sure they were doing what they could to make the team better around him. He’s still too young and too good for them to move on.”
One could argue Burrow wasn’t doing much in the way of “posturing,” either, beyond comments during interviews.
Alas, this is one of those questions that will always hover around the Bengals in national coverage. It is, after all, the franchise that got Carson Palmer’d. It is the franchise that, until this offseason, seemed to drag its feet on modernization and doing literally whatever it takes.
Times have changed, but there will be a lag when it comes to the non-hardcore fans catching up with the narratives. And, of course, there needs to be positive results on the field for the Bengals, too.
