World Gymnastics lifts restrictions on Russian, Belarusian athletes

World Gymnastics has decided to lift all restrictions applicable to Russian and Belarusian athletes since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the gymnastics ruling body said on Monday.

The brief statement did not provide any further details on how the decision is to be implemented.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, the Russian Gymnastics Federation announced that its athletes are now once again permitted to compete with their respective uniforms, flags and anthems. Since 2024, they had been allowed to compete as neutral athletes.

Earlier this month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted all sanctions imposed on athletes from Belarus. The IOC’s restrictions against Russia, however, remain in place.

Russian and Belarussian athletes were banned from competing in many sports in connection with the Ukraine war.

At the Winter Olympics in February, they were allowed by the IOC to compete under a neutral status, but they were allowed to compete with their respective flags at the Paralympics.
