The Pittsburgh Pirates turned to Paul Skenes on Sunday in hopes of avoiding being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Skenes entered the game with 16-straight scoreless innings, and through four innings, he kept Philadelphia in check. However, he allowed two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth as he was pulled before he recorded an out in the sixth.
It was a frustrating outing for Skenes, as he said he pitched well other than the home run to Bryce Harper, which he was frustrated about.
“Other than one pitch, I thought it was really good against them,” Skenes said postgame on Sunday. “Sometimes you throw a pitch, and they take you yard. You can’t get too hung up on that. I just didn’t execute a few pitches, and they got to them. It’s challenging, but it’s the big leagues; every lineup is good. Just got to execute a little more consistently.”
Pirates manager Don Kelly didn’t put any blame on Skenes, as the Pirates lost 6-0, as the offense once again struggled.
“I think that it was combined with struggling offensively, yesterday with Sánchez, and then today with Wheeler,” Kelly said. “(Wheeler) was really good, and we didn’t get anything going offensively, which I think makes it feel like more of a blow. But I think it was more attributed to the offense not being able to get anything going momentum-wise.”
After allowing five runs, Skenes is now 6-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 10 starts.
