We now have a little more clarity regarding James Harden’s future with the Cleveland Cavaliers

Harden has a $42 million player option for next season that he can turn down in favor of a new deal in free agency, and he’s expected to get that in Cleveland.

James Harden expected to remain with Cavaliers on multi-year deal

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Cavs are expected to sign Harden to a new, multi-year deal over the offseason after acquiring him via trade prior to the deadline in February.

Harden has had an up-and-down postseason, as has become his norm, but he helped Cleveland advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.

“Though a formal agreement is not allowed to be completed before the offseason, there is an understanding that the Cavs plan to work out a new deal to retain Harden, sources said,” Windhorst wrote.

“Before the move, they must have had an understanding because Harden could have vetoed any trade. No matter how this playoff run unfolds, Harden, who has been inconsistent in the postseason again, will likely be coming back to Cleveland this summer on a multiyear deal.
