The Toronto Blue Jays have been struggling this season and are trying every possible way to get back on track. There are issues across the roster, and Toronto is searching for solutions in multiple areas.
Fan favorite Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has also been struggling at the plate. He recently discussed not feeling in a good place offensively.
“Obviously, I don’t feel OK right now. I’m not feeling right and you guys can tell that. I’ve been working very hard.” Guerrero said. “I’m just looking to hit one ball very hard. It will stay in my head and my mind. I know things are going to change.”
While Toronto’s offense has struggled, the bigger concern has been the starting rotation. Injuries have been brutal this season, and the situation worsened with news that José Berríos is likely out for the season.
“Jose Berrios to have surgery Wednesday performed by Dr. Meister. Repair existing injury (stress fracture on elbow). There is some concern about ligament – they’ll determine whether he’s done for season whether ligament needs repairing,” Blue Jays broadcaster Hazel Mae posted.
If the Blue Jays are going to get back to the World Series, they will need a major spark. One potential answer could come from the Seattle Mariners and former Cy Young finalist Luis Castillo.
“The Mariners have six healthy starters right now. Castillo has had a tough season so far with a 6.34 ERA in nine starts. He has a 3.64 career ERA, though, and had a 3.54 ERA last season in 32 starts. If the Mariners are willing to make a move, the Blue Jays should call,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
There is no doubt that Toronto wants to return to the World Series stage. However, the Blue Jays know they must add pitching help to get there. While Castillo has struggled this season, he has a proven track record as a frontline starter.
Castillo is currently on a $108 million deal with the Mariners. Toronto is searching for a difference-maker to revive its World Series hopes, and Castillo fits that profile.
