Just two days after shutting down rumors that he was stepping down as Beechwood’s football coach, Jay Volker has indeed stepped down. Legendary Tigers head coach Noel Rash, who won 200 games and eight state titles in his 17-year tenure as a coach, will return to lead Beechwood.
On May 17, Volker sent an email to the district outlining his plan to continue coaching at Beechwood despite taking a teaching job in Ohio. Two days later, Beechwood announced his departure, followed by the hiring of Rash.
“Beechwood Schools regards Coach Volker alongside Coach (Bernie) Barre, Coach (Mike) Yeagle and Coach Rash as yet another state champion football coach. We thank Jay in not only maintaining, but elevating the commitment, the sacrifice and the brotherhood ‒ THE standard of Beechwood football. Coach Volker’s legacy has been etched,” the school said in a post on X.
The post also noted that Volker has been working with Rash to ensure a smooth transition into the summer and 2026 season.

In three seasons, Volker went 37-5, won the 2024 Class 2A state championship and reached the state semifinals in 2023 and 2025.
Since leaving Beechwood after the 2022 season, Rash hasn’t strayed far from the game. He’s served as a special assistant at Holmes and Cincinnati St. Xavier, and stepped in to lead the Conner Cougars to a 4-7 record in 2025 after the sudden death of David Trosper.
The Tigers are once again well-positioned heading into this fall, returning quarterback Emmett Queen, Class 2A, District 5 player of the year and Swiss army knife Tyler Fryman, lead running back Nathan Pabst, and seven of their nine top tacklers from last year.
