The Boston Red Sox lineup finally broke out of its historic slump on Tuesday, fueling a 7-1 rout of the Kansas City Royals.
The Red Sox erupted for 15 hits at Kauffman Stadium, their second-most of the season. Their seven runs were their most since May 5, snapping an 11-game streak of four runs or fewer. They did it by finally coming through with runners in scoring position, going 6-for-14 in those situations after batting .227/.307/.343 in those spots prior to Tuesday.
Boston did its damage early and late, scoring in the first two and last two innings. The Red Sox’s four runs in the ninth inning alone were more than they had scored in any of their previous nine games.
The Red Sox just scored more runs in that 9th inning than they scored in any of their last 9 games.

Jarren Duran put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth, allowing Chad Tracy to save Aroldis Chapman for Wednesday’s series finale if needed. He also walked twice and doubled, emerging from a 6-for-48 skid with one of his best offensive performances of the season.
With back-to-back wins, Boston secured its first series win in two weeks, ending a stretch of three straight series losses. That was also the last time the team had won consecutive games.
The Red Sox will go for their second sweep of the season on Wednesday night behind Connelly Early, who will square off against former Boston pitcher Michael Wacha.
