The Crew will have a new look when they play New York City FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals May 20.
After a 3-4-7 start to the season, the Crew fired coach Henrik Rydstrom on May 17 and hired assistant Laurent Courtois as the interim coach. The Crew have yet to win a game this month and are coming off a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union. They’ll attempt to pick up their first win of the month in the U.S. Open after winning against two USL teams in the prior rounds.
The Crew’s latest cup match was a 4-1 victory against One Knoxville SC April 29. One of eight teams remaining, the Crew match up against NYCFC, who are fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with a 5-4-5 record.
The Crew are competing in the U.S. Open Cup for the first time since 2023. U.S. Soccer changed the number of MLS teams allowed to participate from eight to 16 in 2025, but the Crew were inelgible after already participating in the Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup.
The Crew have competed in 24 U.S. Open Cups, with their 2002 U.S. Open Cup title being the organization’s first major championship.
