Garrick Higgo endured an absolute nightmare at Aronimink last week as he missed the PGA Championship by just one shot.
However, it wasn’t just the fact that Higgo missed the cut that would have frustrated him.
The 27-year-old South African only had himself to blame as he was sent packing after Friday’s second round at Aronimink.
Higgo missed the cut by just one shot after shooting rounds of 69 and 76 at Aronimink.
Garrick Higgo was handed a two-stroke penalty at Aronimink after arriving late to the tee for his first round at the PGA Championship.
Of course, he would have made the weekend had he made his first round tee time on time, due to the fact that he would have posted a 67 on Thursday, rather than a 69.
Just five days after that incident, Higgo split with his caddie, Austin Gaugert.
Garrick Higgo’s ex-caddie breaks silence days after Aronimink fiasco
Now, just one day after the split, Gaugert has broken his silence about what happened.
He took to his Instagram account to make the following statement:
“I want to say something about the incident with Garrick Higgo being late to the tee on Thursday at the PGA Championship,“ Gaugert said.
“As a caddie, you try to do everything you can to prepare your player for competition and I fell short of that.
“Garrick was understanding throughout the situation and handled it with professionalism and class. This has happened to players before and will again. Garrick handled a difficult situation with grace, and I wish him nothing but success moving forward.
“After working with Garrick and finding the highest success in caddying, Garrick has become a better friend to me than just a boss. I will always be grateful for that.“
Garrick Higgo hasn’t covered himself in glory
Gaugert came across really well there.
At no point did he blame Higgo, even though the incident was entirely his former employer’s fault.
The worst part about Garrick Higgo’s tardiness at Aronimink was that he didn’t actually take responsibility for his actions.
The fact that he parted ways with his caddie just days after the incident proves that he was looking to shift the blame elsewhere.
Hopefully Austin Gaugert manages to find himself a new bag very soon.
