Bayern Munich continues to add considered pieces to the puzzle in order to get the most out of their youth system. Along with a new head of youth development, the Bavarians are looking to add some select employees to fill all the needed roles at the FC Bayern Campus. So why not go to RB Salzburg, former workplace of current sporting director Christoph Freund, to find some talent? According to Salzburg news site “Salzburger Nachrichten” (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) the Bavarians will plunder the walking advertisement for energy drinks for a former colleague of Freund’s:

Former RB Salzburg sporting director Bernhard Seonbuchner is set for a move to FC Bayern, where he’s expected to take over a ‘key role’ at the Campus and also work closely with the first team. Seonbuchner had replaced Christoph Freund in Salzburg after the latter moved to Bayern, with the pair now set to be reunited in Munich.

The Salzburg outlet’s report was backed up by Munich news site Tz, with @iMiaSanMia capturing the additional details on the role the 42-year-old will play in Munich:

Christoph Freund is looking to bring his old Salzburg colleague Bernhard Seonbuchner to FC Bayern. The move still needs approval from Salzburg. In Munich, Seonbuchner is set to help shape the transition between the academy and the first team. The 42-year-old will also be heavily involved with the coaches, he would observe and contribute to the development of the youth teams’ training sessions on a daily basis. Seonbuchner holds a UEFA Pro License.

The role Seonbuchner currently plays for the RB multi-group ownership is Director of Football at Salzburg’s feeder club, FC Liefering. He first took the role for 12 months in 2022 before being promoted to Sporting Director at Salzburg. There, he made some poor decisions and kept the role at what he called the coolest club in the world for just 15 months before being put back in his role as Director of Football at FC Liefering.

It is his contract at FC Liefering that Bayern would need to buy out. Interestingly enough, the role Seonbuchner is being hired to fill sounds a lot like the role of “team lead coaching development and playing philosophy”, which the Bavarians hired Rene Marić to fill in late 2023. Marić quickly vacated the position, though, as he became the U-19’s head coach until the end of the 2023/24 season and was even promoted to head coach Vincent Kompany’s coaching staff when the Begian arrived in the summer of 2024.

The position has remained vacant for the last two years and it would be nice to see it filled again. Maintaining a consistent playing style across all youth teams is paramount for not only developing players with the kind of traits that fit the preferred system but ensuring that these young players can ease in to the senior team with much less of an adjustment period. It is a big reason, if clearly not the only one, as to how Barcelona’s academy can continue to provide the first team with players that fit so well. If the Bavarians are serious about integrating a lot of Campus players in the future, establishing a consistent style across all youth teams is high on the list of priorities.
