What is Ed Orgeron’s new job with LSU football?

LSU football finalized a deal to hire Ed Orgeron to Lane Kiffin’s coaching staff on Wednesday, as reported by multiple outlets.

For Orgeron, it marks a reunion on multiple fronts. Orgeron was LSU’s head coach from 2016-2021, winning a national title in 2019 and leading LSU to a NY6 bowl in 2018. Orgeron also has extensive experience with LSU head coach Lane Kiffin.

Orgeron’s specific role at LSU is just what you’d expect. Orgeron will be special assistant to defense and recruiting. Orgeron will be right in his wheelhouse — hitting the recruiting trail and assisting with the defensive line. Orgeron has been respected as one of the top recruiters in the sport for over 20+ years.

Here’s what Kiffin said in a statement released by LSU on late Wednesday night:

“I’m excited to bring Coach Orgeron back to LSU. He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, but especially the impact he can have for us recruiting the great state of Louisiana. Coach O understands my expectations and commitment to being a championship program. I look forward to seeing him with recruits and his intensity working with our defensive players.”

Orgeron will bring an immediate boost to LSU on the recruiting trail. Orgeron signed several top-five classes when he was LSU’s head coach. Between his time at LSU and USC, he’s been involved with recruiting some of the best players this century.

Orgeron’s relationship with Kiffin dates back to their time on staff at USC under Pete Carroll. Later, Orgeron worked under Kiffin at Tennessee and USC.

Orgeron won 51 games as LSU’s head coach, but Orgeron and LSU went their separate ways as the program slipped in 2020-21, winning just 11 games across the two years.
