Florida junior Rueben Chinyelu makes 2026 NBA draft decision known

Florida center Rueben Chinyelu intends to withdraw from the 2026 NBA draft and return to Gainesville for his senior year, the school announced on Thursday.

Chinyelu announced last month that he would be declaring for the draft while maintaining his remaining college eligibility. He competed last week in the draft combine, emerging as one of the top performers after averaging 13.5 points and 10 rebounds in two scrimmages.

Gators coach Todd Golden said on Tuesday that he was “cautiously optimistic” that Chinyelu would return, citing his desire to run it back after a second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament. He will now have his star center back, likely solidifying Florida as the favorite for next season.

Chinyelu was the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 10.9 points, 11.2 rebounds and one block while shooting 58.4% from the field in 35 games last season. He led the country in total rebounds (393) and was 19th in defensive rating (93.6).

The Nigerian became the first Gators player since the 1975-76 season to average a double-double. He set single-season program records for double-doubles (19) and offensive rebounds (137), while his 393 total rebounds ranked third.

Chinyelu was considered a second-round pick this year, which played a factor in his decision to forgo the draft. He will now have the chance to improve his overall skill set and ability while helping the Gators seek their second championship in three years.
