The clock is ticking and the meter is running. So says Boston Red Sox president Sam Kennedy with respect to the club already looking to wheel and deal ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
“There’s been conversations going on earlier than ever before on that front,” Kennedy said Friday to WEEI, per Masslive.com.
Kennedy noted that early trade talks aren’t easy because there isn’t a lot of separation yet in the standings. Just take a look at the American League Wild Card race. The New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers currently lead the pack. But eight teams, including the Red Sox, are within five games of the final wild-card spot.
“But yeah, if the question are Craig (Breslow) and the team in baseball operations are trying to improve the team right now? The answer is yes,” Kennedy noted.
“Will we be able to get a deal done or match up on something? I have no idea is the truth. But there’s conversations. There’s urgency,” Kennedy added.
The Red Sox have won four of their last five games and take a three-game winning streak into Friday’s date with the Minnesota Twins.
FanGraphs gives Boston a 34.9% chance of making the playoffs despite stumbling out of the gate with a 12-19 record in March and April.
The ice-cold start cost manager Alex Cora his job, with the Red Sox firing their long-time skipper on April 25. Interim manager Chad Tracy has steadied the ship, with Boston going 12-10 since he replaced Cora in the dugout.
