Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is ready for the DFB-Pokal, but it a little wary of facing VfB Stuttgart yet again.
“When you play Stuttgart five times, five times against the same coach, then of course you know your opponent very well. In the end, as Sebastian (Hoeneß) said, there are moments when you believe that if you continue this way, you can be successful. But you also see moments when they can hurt us. We simply want to be there in the game tomorrow and have full confidence that we can do it. We also know how difficult it is to compete against this opponent,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “I’ve never taken part in a German cup final before, but I have in other finals. I won my first FA Cup when the team [Man City] hadn’t won it for 40 years. Winning here is always a historic moment. Stuttgart managed that last year. This season, the whole team has been talking about this cup since day one. That shows that Bayern Munich holds this cup in high regard. We want to bring it back to Munich.”
Kompany knows the expectations are for Bayern Munich to win the match and clinch a domestic double, but the head coach will not begin to reflect on the season until it is officially over.
“We don’t assess a season the day before a final. Now we have to write our story for this game, we have to put on our boots tomorrow and play the game. Everything else is irrelevant, it doesn’t play a role in my motivation. I really want to win tomorrow, that’s the only thing that matters right now, not the analysis,” Kompany said.
As far as the lineup goes, things will likely look familiar, except for Jonas Urbig stepping in for injured starter Manuel Neuer at goalkeeper.
“We’ve said many times before that we’ve got a great set-up in the goalkeeping position. They all enjoy working together. It’s a coincidence, but Jonas has already played against Stuttgart twice. We had no doubts when Jonas played against Leverkusen in the Champions League for the first time. Nor did we have any against Stuttgart. Hopefully he’ll play well tomorrow – but the pressure isn’t on his shoulders, it’s on other players who’ve been here before. For example, Joshua Kimmich or myself as the coach,” Kompany noted.
