Khamzat Chimaev was reportedly hoping to headline UFC Abu Dhabi in a title rematch against Sean Strickland, but the promotion appears to be heading elsewhere.
Russian outlet Vestnik MMA claims the UFC has instead turned to the light heavyweight division, with Khalil Rountree Jr. and Magomed Ankalaev expected to headline the 25 July card.
The bout would give Rountree a chance to climb into the top tier of the division, while Ankalaev could strengthen his case for another title shot.
UFC Abu Dhabi reportedly set with Khalil Rountree Jr. and Magomed Ankalaev
Rountree is currently ranked fifth at 205lbs, while Ankalaev holds the number one contender spot.
Both last fought on the same night in October 2025, and their meeting could now help determine who moves closest to champion Carlos Ulberg.
With Ulberg likely sidelined until next year, the UFC may need to keep the division moving, which could make this matchup a title eliminator.
It could also lead towards an interim title fight, with Jiri Prochazka and Paulo Costa still relevant names in the wider picture. Chimaev could become another factor if he moves up.
Ankalaev added to the speculation last Thursday when he posted that his next fight had been signed, though he did not mention an opponent.
“Contract signed. I miss dunking on people. See you soon,” the former champion wrote on X.
If Vestnik MMA’s report is accurate, UFC Abu Dhabi could end up shaping the next year of the light heavyweight division.
