On Thursday, May 21, 2026, the NASCAR world changed forever. Richard Childress Racing driver Kyle Busch died at 41 years old after being hospitalized with a severe illness. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell held a press conference on Friday and brought up an idea that Busch had mentioned to him this week.
Busch sent O’Donnell a text on Tuesday suggesting an “Over 40 Rule,” allowing him to run full-time in the NASCAR Cup and Truck Series during the 2027 season. O’Donnell then said NASCAR held an internal meeting about the idea on Wednesday, during which the sport said it was “actually good.”
Before his tragic death, Busch had the idea of running full-time in the Truck Series next season. Busch would have tried to become the first driver to ever win championships in all three NASCAR series. If the sport decides to make it an official rule, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to call it the “Rowdy Rule.”
