Sofia Phillipou has been a jack-of-all-trades for the Pingry School softball team, not only holding down multiple positions on the field, but contributing as a key bat to the attack as the Big Blue have proven they belong since moving up from the Raritan Division to the Skyland Conference’s elite group in the Delaware.
That was certainly true last week as Pingry swept three games, including a five-inning mercy-rule win over Kent Place in the Prep A state final, the Big Blue’s third straight crown. Phillipou went 8-for-11 with two doubles and a triple, for the week, scoring six runs and picking up five RBIs.
The sophomore is hitting .338 for the season with four doubles and two triples, 22 runs and 11 RBIs, drawing six walks and stealing eight bases.
“Sofia is a major force for Pingry,” Big Blue coach Chip Carver said. “Her ability to excel at many positions — catcher, third base, outfield, and even pitch if we need it, gives us tremendous flexibility. On top of that, she is a significant contributor on the offensive side of the ball. Add in her softball knowledge and her great attitude and she makes us all better.”
