The San Antonio Spurs opened the Western Conference Finals with a 122-115 double-overtime road win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1. However, after dropping Game 2 and suffering the 123-108 loss at home in Game 3, the Spurs now trail 2-1 in the series.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers are facing a 3-0 deficit against the New York Knicks after a hard-fought 121-108 home loss in Game 3. The Knicks have looked dominant throughout the series and now sits just one win away from reaching its first NBA Finals since 1999.
Following the Knicks’ Game 3 win over the Cavaliers, two-time NBA All-Star Isiah Thomas shared his thoughts on social media.
“Losing game 1 the way Cleveland did messed up the whole series now they gon get swept. Finals in NYC is going to be crazy!!! Spurs/Knicks finals rematch from 1999,” Thomas tweeted.
The 1999 NBA Finals represented both the close of one chapter and the rise of another. That series featured the heavily favored Spurs against the underdog Knicks, who became the first No. 8 seed in NBA history to advance to the Finals.
The Spurs went on to win the championship in five games, which was the franchise’s first NBA title. It ultimately laid the groundwork for a dynasty that eventually produced five championships across two decades.
The Spurs are now led by Victor Wembanyama and a talented young core, as they are aiming to build another championship era. Game 4 tips off at 7 p.m., and the Spurs will need a win to even the series.
