Homers, gems and steals: Vote for IndyStar softball players of the week (May 18-23)

IndyStar will be recognizing the top softball players in Indiana with our players of the week poll.

Congratulations to Franklin Central’s Olivia Starr on being voted Player of the Week for May 11-16! Starr hit for the cycle in the Marion County championship game vs. Roncalli, collecting two RBIs and four runs scored as part of the 4-for-4 performance. She also homered vs. Brownsburg and clocked three hits in a 14-2 win over Lutheran. Starr finished the week with nine hits, five RBIs and two homers.

Here were the top performers from the past week.

Kelsey Armes, Elwood

The senior shortstop clocked four hits, 10 runs and six RBIs in four games. She homered and scored four runs against Monroe Central (three RBIs) and Tri-Central, and clocked two hits and a couple RBIs vs. Delta. Armes is batting .698 on the season with 44 hits, 16 homers, 56 runs and 51 RBIs.

Kaitlyn Burdick, Hamilton Southeastern

It was a one-game week for the Royals and Burdick made the most of it, clocking a home run, three RBis and two runs scored in a 7-1 win over Franklin Central. 

Keylie Byrd, Wes-Del

The senior picked up five hits, four runs and three RBIs in a Saturday doubleheader. Byrd is batting .509 on the season and has 28 runs and 12 RBIs. 

Marlee Cavinder, South Central (Union Mills)

The senior first baseman notched a double against Kankakee Valley, doubled again and drove in two runs against LaPorte, then went 3-for-4 with a couple runs and three RBIs in a 13-10 win over Highland. Cavinder drew three walks and an HBP in her three games. 

Ally Compton, Munster

Compton had three hits — including a triple and a homer — and four RBIs at the plate, and allowed only four hits and a single earned run with 25 strikeouts in the circle. The senior’s best outing came in a 5-1 win over Illiana Christian: 7 innings, one unearned run on two hits with 13 strikeouts and two walks.

Chelbi Condon, Borden

Condon went 3-for-3 in a 12-3 win over Scottsburg, doubling twice, scoring twice and driving in two RBIs. She tripled and scored two runs in a 12-1 win over Lanesville. 

Brynley Erb, Western

Erb set the state’s career home runs record with her 70th blast last week. A senior Kentucky commit, Erb had four hits on the week and has a career .652 average with 234 hits, 70 homers, 235 RBIs and 228 runs. She’s also stolen 78 bases in four varsity seasons. 

Tessa Hammons, Greenwood

Hammons bounced back from a loss to Plainfield with seven scoreless innings vs. Indian Creek in the Johnson County championship game. She allowed only two hits, issued three walks and struck out eight. Hammons also tallied three hits (two vs. Plainfield), including an RBI double against IC.

Lilly Heath, Avon

The senior broke the Orioles’ all-time hits record against Noblesville, clocking her 160th career hit — a double — to surpass 2009 grad Jenny Esparza. That was the second hit of the week for Heath, who also scored a run against the Millers. 

Jocelyn Hornett, Brownsburg

The senior had four hits (a homer and a double), three RBIs and a couple runs scored in an 8-7 win over Danville, then notched another hit against Fishers. She’s batting .463 on the season with five dingers and 24 RBIs.

Lulu Johnston, Crown Point

Johnston, a sophomore, had RBIs in all three games she played in this week. She had four with a double and a homer against LaPorte, drove in another vs. Lowell and notched two as part of a 3-for-3 effort with three runs scored vs. Illiana Christian.

Kaitlin Molden, FW Carroll

Molden tallied six hits, including a double in three games. She also drove in three RBIs, two of which came in an 8-0 win over Columbia City. The sophomore was perfect in the field with an assist and 39 putouts.

Chloe Moss, Lawrence North

Moss walked off a 4-3 win over Ben Davis with an RBI base hit in the bottom of the seventh. That capped a two-hit, two-RBI performance for the sophomore, who also had a hit vs. Tri-West. Moss also pitched three innings against the Giants, allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout. She K’d three vs. the Bruins.

Addisyn Trackwell, Eastern Hancock

Trackwell collected three hits, scored twice and stole four bases in her lone game of the week, a 9-3 win over Shenandoah. The Louisville commit is batting .508 with 27 runs scored and 30 steals on the season. 

Harper Rumble, Penn

The sophomore capped a 4-for-4 performance in game two of a doubleheader vs. Lake Shore (Mich.) with a walk-off, two-run triple in the seventh. That hit scored sister Logan, who homered twice to set Penn’s single-season home run record. Harper also had a hit in game one vs. Lakeshore and another vs. South Bend Saint Joseph during the week. 

Addison Wolff, Center Grove

The senior outfielder scored a run in all three games she played last week and notched hits in two of the three. She had a couple in an 8-1 win over Mt. Vernon, then tacked on another vs. Shelbyville. Wolff also stole two bases.
