Several Indian Premier League captains have expressed their reservations regarding the Impact Player rule in India’s premier T20 competition, ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Just days before the start of the 19th season of the IPL, all 10 skippers came together for a captain’s meet, where they interacted with the media.
A source from the IPL told NAI that during the captain’s, the majority of them expressed unhappiness over the Impact player rule. The source said: “Majority of the captains gave their inputs on the Impact Player rule and expressed their reservations even though the BCCI has extended the rule till 2027. They were told it can only be reviewed after the 2027 edition and not before that.”
Earlier, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel echoed a similar sentiment, as the all-rounder said: “Earlier we used to pick all-rounders for this role (batting and bowling). Now the team management goes with a particular batter or bowler, they say why do we need an all-rounder? Being an all-rounder myself, I don’t like it but at the same time, rules are rules. We have to follow them. But personally, I don’t like it.”

What is the Impact Player rule in IPL?
The Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute a player during their innings based on match conditions, adding a dynamic element to the game.
For example, if a team is batting first, they can field eight batters in their lineup and keep a bowler as an Impact Player. Once their batting is over, the team can immediately bring in the extra bowler from reserves and use him as the Impact Player in the match.
This way, teams benefit both while batting and bowling during the course of a game.
